INTEGRATED MULTI-TROPHIC AQUACULTURE IN RAS (IMRAS) A PROJECT THAT BECOMES REALITY
In the world of aquaculture, the term IMTA (Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture) refers to multiple cultures of aquatic organisms that interact and grow via the water in shared and/or connected systems. This system connected in RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System), i.e. closed-loop water recirculation-control apparatus in aquaculture, constitutes the new form of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture known as IMRAS (Integrated Multi-Trophic Recirculating Aquaculture System).
In recent years, a series of research projects and University-level experimentation have taken place, in which Acquario 57 has invariably participated and contributed to the knowledge-base in Italy to implement IMTA in RAS fish farms, both in rural areas and in coastal areas.

Therefore, with constant research and the use of innovative technologies, Acquario 57 is proposing to the aquacultural community, to embody an ecosystems-approach by making use of a vital opportunity for the further development of this revolutionary sector of Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture. The European Community has strongly promoted IMTA within the framework of the Region of Sicily – Agriculture, Rural Development and Mediterranean Fisheries Department towards the subsequent implementation of the 2014/2016 EMFF directive, which has also been proposed to all other Italian regions. This is why today, we can affirm with a strong conviction, that IMTA will become a true reality in the Aquaculture sector all across, Italy, Europe, and beyond.
